Debate Time

Until we can get into the library to get to work on the Dream Team Debates, let's keep our argumentative natures in check and do some debating. You can pick whatever side you believe in, but you must provide three good reason for your position with details, which means when you sayYES or NO, you must give detailed supporting statements.

Here is the statement:

High schools should randomly test their athletes for drug use.  YES or NO?

  1. No, I do not think that high school athletes should be randomly drug tested. A lot of kids go out and join a sport just so they can stay active, but majority join just to have fun and meet people. Drug testing may be a deterrent. Thus being because to be rather blunt about it we all know kids are commonly smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol eventually some time in high school. This may be a reason not to go out for the team even though that’s sad, but it’s the truth for some individuals who aren’t doing it because they love the sport. Students are who doing drugs may feel like this is violating their privacy. Why does it matter? Is what a lot of people think.
This is not a pro sport they aren’t getting paid to go play this sport. It definitely isn’t college so the games they play aren’t bringing in a significant amount of money to the school. High school isn’t as serious as college either. This is why I don’t see the need to waste money on buying drug test. School everywhere just had to lay a lot of teachers off because of the “budget cut.”
High school is when kids are turning into young adults the schools needed to give them responsibility. Giving them the trust and, responsibility to keep themselves out of trouble is exactly what they need. This is what they need because they are learning who they are.

  2. I believe that high school athletes should be drug tested randomly. If you join a sport it is something that should be treated seriously. You shouldn't worry about being tested for drugs if you have nothing to hide. If you can go out on the field knowing you havent done any drug without it being prescribed you shouldnt have any worries. It makes you a better player and a better contributer to the team by saying "hey I can stop doing this for the team". Also if youre in high school without a drug problem this makes you a better choice for schools with really great teams. A college coach would much rather have a sober player than a drugged up one. Also if high school athletes can play on a field with a huge crowd looming over them i think that giving a simple drug test would NOT be a problem to them. With many teams aspiring to have 1st place I dont think it would hurt a team any if they all had sober players. Now if a team had players who shot up a million and more drugs into their systems, this would give that team an unfair advantage against the teams they go against. Who would want a drugged up bipolar player on their team? I know for a fact that i wouldn't. To institute random drug tests, this would mean that the players who aren't sober, who take drugs, would be picked out of the team. Sure it may make the team weaker but that same team could also be a thousand times stronger without drugged up players. The team could have the sigh of relief that their team is 100% clean. That no drug has tainted the reputation of the team. In countless ways, random drug testing could assist high school teams rather than hinder them. This is why I support the idea of random drug testing in high school sports teams.

  3. Yes, high schools should randomly test athletes for drugs. The drug that I would guess to be number one in high school athletics is steroids. In my high school experiences. i've seen tons of injections, pill popping, and powder-taking. The students that take these drugs happen to be the star athletes. It is so funny because I actually see how good they're doing and I think to myself, I think about the cheating and disrespect. I believe that drug testing would immediately put a stop to the insane high school athletes cheating the system. Not only do drug tests put an end to steroid abuse, but they also find illegal drugs in an individuals waste. This is important because I believe that drug addicts should NOT be athletes. They need to choose either sports or drugs. It's unfortunate the world is this way but some things may never change. So many kids take advantage of the fact that there aren't any drug tests so it's practically guaranteed that drugs could be found. I am positive that people use drugs and it doesn't get any more specific than to see it with my own eyes.

  4. Yes, high school athletes should be randomly drug tested. Sports are a lot of fun and people have a great time playing them however, competition can get the best of us. Some students want to be the best at the sport to the point they will do anything to get there. So what do the students do after practice fails to give them the results they want quick, they turn to drugs. These drugs could range anywhere from speed to steroids and no matter what the drug is it causes an unfair advantage to those who take the drug. Not to mention with some students whacked out of their minds on drugs they could seriously hurt another player. Kids are taught since birth what is right and wrong and that cheating is wrong. Well that’s just what drugs do for athletes it helps them cheat the game and other student athletes. Using drugs to enhance sports also tells a student it’s ok to take drugs and destroy your body. If we can’t test to see if a student is using a drug how can we know if they are or aren’t. At least if we can test for drugs we can not only ban the student from playing, but also get him help and medical treatment for this drug. Most drugs are bad for the human body especially those that are made to enhance the human body unnaturally. So, for the health of the student himself we should be able to test for drugs. Lastly allowing random drug tests protects other student athletes as well. If one student on a team uses performance enhancing drugs and becomes much more talented his teammates are going to want to know what he did. Once he tells his team there is bound to be those that will try it as well. This will cause not the destruction of one life, but multiple more to come. Drugs don’t affect just one person they affect everyone so for the health and safety of everyone student athletes should be randomly drug tested

  5. No I dont belive high school athlets should be tested. First off not all high school athlets are in it to go to college or go pro in it. There only a couple people that actually go for that. Viva my best freind rob gouldely. Secondly what if the high school athlet gets teased and or picked on for not joining the crowd and doing drugs and drinking alcohhol. Last but least I belive if your the high school athelete its your body put in it what you want just rember its going to affect you in the long run.

  6. I believe that high schools should randomly test their athletes for drug use. There's no real reason not to. If pro athletes are getting tested for performance enhancing drugs, then high school should be no different (especially when those athletes happen to be underage). Not just for steroids, but also for alcohol, marijuana, etc. It's against the law for high school students to be doing any of that stuff anyway. With the number of high school students that DO do drugs, I think that randomly testing athletes will help thin out the ratio a little.

  7. Yes, high school athletes should randomly be drug tested. A lot of high school athletes want to take their sport to the next level and join a pro sport, in pro sports they randomly have drug tests. If one team works hard to get where they are and is getting there without drugs it isnt fair that one team gets away with using drugs/sterioids. Also a long with the pro sports, if a coach has their eye on two athletes and one is better than the other because of drugs/steriods it isnt fair to the other athlete who lost out on a chance.

  8. This was something hard to decide on. My opinion is that steroids should be illegal no matter what level of sports you're playing. Wether it's high school level sports, college, or pro, cheating is cheating. Yet a good point Carmella made was that teens are going to drink alcohol or smoke marijuana and there is nothing to stop it. I'm not generalizing that teens ALWAYS do, because I know many that don't. I'd rather those people be in sports then always having free time to get in trouble and if drug testing is going to drive teens away from joining sports then I'd rather them not get tested. I also know that drug testing is VERY expensive, which happens to be money that we pay as tax payers for people that are ruining their lives. I feel like my money shouldn't go to someone that's afflicting themselves. I also have seen teens smoke and do all they want, then use a flush out products before drug tests, and they tested negative. I think that's like double cheating, but then they would totally get away with it. So is drug testing worth the money? I honestly would drug test my kids, and I would make sure that they're not cheaters. Simply because many people try hard to get where they are in sports and for someone to get better in a non natural way is basically taking someone else's hard work.

  9. Yes. I do think there should be random drug testing but, to an extent. Meaning the level of trouble one would get in trouble for depending on the drug found. For instance, if one is taking and get caught with Steroids that should be an immediate expulsion from the team. Drugs like that are obviously used as a gate way to excelling in ones sport. Those are cheaters in my book and I believe the are not only disrespecting themselves for not giving themselves enough hope but, they are disrespecting all the other team members of the team who are working there ass off. On the flip side as we all know and how Carmella pointed out, teenagers have a tendency to go towards certain drugs such as: marijuana and alcohol to have a "good time" during their weekends. Should these sports players also be immediately kicked off the team? I think not! I say this because those are not drugs that help a sports player do any better. I am not saying they should not be punished because as we all know marijuana is illegal and the drinking age is 21; so if any action are to be placed it could be a minor suspension from the team, possibly the from school in general. They should not be kicked off the team.

  10. I think athletes should be randomly drugged tested at all times. Some kids may do sports to have fun and meet people but others do it to win and be champions at any cost even if it means cheating. Taking steroids or spawn to boost your strength and aggression is cheating and a random drug test will help catch those cheaters. Instead putting in hard work and training some people use these drugs, there are other things you can use like protein shakes and bars and going to the gym but people want to take the easy rode. I also think that the random drug test will help kids stop drinking and smoking. I mean yea we are teens in high school and we are going to try new things and party and drink but when your in a sport you shouldn’t be doing it on the regular anyway. Smoking is just bad for you period you wouldn’t even be able to do the sport cause of the bad lungs your gonna have from all the cigarettes and weed you’ve been smoking.
